Camp Cabins Logging / Mining / Retreat Kit 1029-A
Both logging and mining companies were a dangerous and a colorful enterprise. The railroads played an important part in the lives of the loggers and miners. Many types of camps were created, some of the older cabins were divided into 2 rooms. The kitchen/dining room would have log tables and benches, while the other room was the sleeping quarters lined with double tier bunks for up to 30 men. There were 17 logging railroads in the White Mountains region alone that would have had cabins for the railroad workers and loggers. From 1860's to 1900 New Hampshire forest thrived with the demand for lumber. As for the mining camps many turned into bustling towns with saloons and merchants.

| Congress Mercado Congress, Arizona Kit 1030 | |
|---|---|
Congress Mercado Congress, Arizona Kit 1030
Gold was discovered in Congress in 1884 and more than 400 men came to work the mines aided by the addition of the railroad. This structure predates the 1900's. There used to be a row of several of them, 7 or 8 if I'm correct. It was originally used as a miner's house then later as a ""crib"" (or a house for prostitution). When the mines ceased to operate after the 1930's business in the area dwindled off and moved away. The building was then rented on and off to tenants and eventually rented out as a small store for, no less... mining supplies. It's been abandoned for several years now but there's still a few signs and countertop inside that would let you know you could once purchase supplies there. On careful inspection the original colors seem to be white walls with a light or pale green (similar to Penn Central green).

By 1880 the phrase "Badman from Bodie" described the town's rambunctious inhabitants, earning the community a reputation for violence that rivaled Tombstone, Deadwood and Dodge City. This kit is based loosely on a structure found in Bodie, California.

| Bank of Tomichi & General Store Tomichi, Colorado - Kit 1048 |
|---|
Bank of Tomichi and General Store Tomichi, Colorado Kit 1048
Ore was first discovered in the Tomichi district of Gunnison county in 1879. Tomichi could not support a full time bank because the population was not big enough, like most other small mining towns in the late 1800πs. The result of this situation often lead to banks doubling with other businesses, such as supply stores. The bank was forced to move to a different camp after the smelter burned to the ground only three years after it was built. In 1899, a landslide swept the town away in a flurry of snow and stones, destroying all of the machinery and taking several lives.

James P. Cleator - General Store Cleator, Arizona Kit 1049
In 1905, James P. Cleator arrived at Turkey Creek Station from California. By 1925, "Jimmie" Cleator had officially changed the name of Turkey Creek Station to Cleator. Cleator built the James P. Cleator General Store right next to the railroad track in 1913, and installed a generator, giving electricity to the town. Unfortunately, the Bradshaw Mountain Railway was removed from Cleator in 1932. With the railroad business gone, the population of the town diminished but the town has managed to hold on until current day, surviving because of the few stubborn local miners and occasional tourists."

Miners Union Hall Bodie, California Kit 1052
As the labor forces grew in the mining industry across America miners were often treated poorly and considered an easily replaceable unskilled labor source. It didn't take long for labor unions to form to protect the interest and safety of the miners. The town of Bodie, California was no exception to this institution.

| Tolleson Grocery and Past Time Pool Hall Wickenburg, Arizona - Kit 1054 |

Tolleson Grocery and Past Time Pool Hall Wickenburg, Arizona Kit 1054
Henry Wickenburg came to the area in search of gold. He was rewarded with the discovery of Vulture Mine, where over $30 million in gold was found. Ranchers and farmers discovered the fertile flood plain of the Hassayampa River and settled in the area. Together with Henry Wickenburg and the miners, they helped found the young community of Wickenburg in 1863. It was a rough start for the town with Indian wars, mine closures, desperados, drought and a disastrous flood in 1890 when the Walnut Creek Dam burst. Despite these trials and tribulations the town continued to grow and in 1895 the railroad arrived in town. The Town of Wickenburg was incorporated in 1909. This kit is modeled after the Tolleson Grocery and Past Time Pool Hall. Although altered, this structure still sits on Center Street.

The Town of Wickenburg was incorporated in 1909. This kit represents the structure located to the right of the Tolleson Grocery store. The actual use for this structure is not exactly know but the best guess from photos is that it was used as a feed store. The structure still stands on Center Street although it looks a bit different today. We named the kit after Jim Bansner since he's been supplying us with the prototype drawings.

| Berry Machine Shop. Wolfeborough, New Hampshire - Kit 1018 |
|---|
Berry Machine Shop. Wolfeborough, New Hampshire. Kit 1018 Limited Edition of 100 kits.
In 1901 the Hersey Brothers Saw Mill became O.P. Berry & Company which manufactured excelsior packing material. The machine shop underwent some changes with the addition of the Penstock building. The Boiler building was added to the machine shop complex around 1917 to contain the boiler to produce steam for heat in the winter time. During the 1920's the machine shop was very active as a subcontractor providing machine parts to many industrial manufacturers in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In 1926, the Berry Machine Company began producing the "Rimjack". This revolutionary piece of hardware was manufactured for the sole purpose of making it easy to change a flat tire on the automobile. Unfortunately the car manufacturers changed the type of tires and the Berry rimjacks became obsolete before even getting to market. From 1926-1979 the Machine Shop continued to supply parts but its main function was to repair the machinery used in the Excelsior Mill across the Smith River. In December of 1998 a fire destroyed the last standing building of the Barry Mills Complex.
