Our favorite bridges include many, some of them "only available as scratch-built"...but the ones we stock are those that are tried and true. These are the classics that look good anywhere and which can be assembled without becoming a major frustrating project. Our criteria is that they must fit within the attention span of one or two evenings of work...not the sort of thing that becomes an unfinished project with pieces lost long before completion.

Merchant Street Bridge - New from Monroe Models
Based on designs of the 1920's and 1930's.
Still seen across America today. This double track bridge includes laser cut sidewalk material, roadway signs and full photo instructions. Made of High Density Gypsum.

STONE ARCH CULVERT. Many of these still around. We see them all over the old Pennsylvania mainline in our part of the world. Nicely cast in Hydrocal. With care, the stonework colors can be matched to your local environs. A perfect detail for single tracks or extend the middle run-under for doubles. $30. Qty:
CONCRETE BRIDGE. Simple, straightforward bridge used to bridge railroad over other rails or lesser roadways. Single track, spans up to 67 foot opening. Cast hydrocal pieces, assemble with carpenter's glue or white glue. $25 Qty:
ART DECO BRIDGE. 55 foot, classic built in the days when appearance counted for something. I can remember many of these and they are still commonplace on class one highways and in metropolitan areas. Can carry double track main or single. Very simple kit with cast hydrocal and metal parts. Easy one evening assembly. $35 Qty:
CONCRETE BOX CULVERT. Just the thing to give some realism to those long straight runs of track. Single or double track, includes both sides of culvert and the run-under. Very realistic. Straighforward castings of hydrocal. $15. Qty:

THE CENTRAL VALLEY TRUSS BRIDGE:
This jewel was introduced over ten years ago by Jack Parker and its quality has ever been equaled by others. A delightfully graceful truss bridge with superb rivet detail. A so-so set of instructions but a good enough picture so that you can fill in the missing information by looking at the completed object. We've done quite a few of them and about the only problem we've ever had was breakage on the tie rods; be careful with these, they are the fragile part of the kit.

The bridge is 21 inches long. Link two or more together with a stone center pier or use a short girder bridge as an approach span to really accentuate the presence of the truss bridge. Can be kit bashed into a double track bridge and also as a curved arch Pratt bridge of somewhat heavier construction.

THE WPA STYLE HIGHWAY OVERPASS SYSTEM

THE STONE ARCH BRIDGE: This kit is made of Hydrocal by C.C. Crow and has some of the finest hand carved stone reproduction we've ever encountered. The base unit consists of a single double track arch with two flanking approach sections. A stone interior is provided for the underneath portion of the arch.
The arch is large enough to pass a double track mainline underneath if required. Additional arch sections are available, so that the kit can be extended into a stone viaduct such as that in service across the Susquehanna river at Harrisburg. Riser sections for the arches are also available, making it possible to raise them and convert the bridge into a viaduct reminiscent of the famous one at Starrucca Creek.
Arch sections are 5 1/2 inches long, each approach section is 5 1/2 inches long. The basic kit is $ 40, each additional arch section is $ 25 and each pier riser is $ 5. A well thought out kit and, if you like realistic looking masonry, it is beyond question the finest available.

GIRDER BRIDGES: We have these in just about every length and form that could be needed by anyone. The one shown above is supplied by Jack Parker's Central Valley. When available, we also stock those made by Micro-Engineering (shown below). Through plate girder bridges for both single track and double track are made by both firms. All of these can be bashed into longer or shorter lengths if required or shortened to suit your own scenic situation.

MICRO-ENGINEERING STEEL TRESTLES: Ever look up at those tall steel trestles? Impressive. Grace and beauty along with pure raw strength. Our favorite is one near Monessen, on the old line of the P. & W.V. A trestle that crosses a valley in a broad sinuous curve...what a sight!

The only worthwhile kit we've found for these is one put out by Micro-Engineering on a very sporadic basis. The kit comes in a basic unit that includes two tall towers and the girder bridges to handle the span between them. Micro-Engineering spans are also available below in scale 150 feet or scale 210 feet long by 77 scale feet high. You can of course, use girders of different span or deeper girder construction from other kits if these suit your needs better. The trestles work up nicely and, together with the footings mentioned below, they can be a stunning addition.

Each trestle tower is 17 inches high and it can be shortened or lengthened by the judicious use of foundations and scenery.
